New Technologies

We have been learning about so many new technologies in this course. What new technology will you adopt first for your classroom this year as we go back to school in about one month? I want to blog for each of my classes. I want to learn and get more proficient with Prezi presentations. I want to be able to access YouTube in my classroom for to show their on-line tutorials from OWL for example. I will encourage my students to use and open SKYPE on the night before an assignment is due. I would love to incorporate the iPad into my classroom with one classroom set of iPads as some teachers already have in the state. At the very least, it would be nice for a technologically minded teacher to have an iPad to use in class. The possibilities there are endless. These are just a few examples. How do you plan to incorporate these new technologies into your classroom activities?

  1. Those are some great ideas about how to use different technologies in your classroom. I am down here at Monument Valley High School where all the students have iPods and all the teachers have iPads, thanks to a federal grant. You can read about it on my blog which is found at http://my.uen.org/myuen/242398. It is kind of a controversial initiative but I’ve stopped worrying about all the debate. Now I’m just figuring out new ways to use the iPods in my classroom. One of the apps I use is called Responseware, which allows me to ask the students a question and have them respond on their iPods. Once they answer, I can see their responses on my computer, which is nice for students who are nervous about raising their hands in class. There are a lot more apps I use with the students and every week I find even more. If you want to check out my blog for EDUC 6036, that would be great.
    Thanks,

  2. I just completed writing a grant last month for an ipod cart. I am in hopes to get it so that I can use them to create a digital portfolio for each of my students for reading. I went to an apple tech training just before school was done and learned about a variety of programs and things to do with them. Now I will just cross my fingers and hope (or start to write another grant somewhere else).

  3. Crystal,
I really want to find a way to incorporate Skype into my classroom. Even if I Skype with a guest speaker or something like that. I want my students to see me use that sort of technology and then I hope that in turn they will want to go home and try it out for themselves. I feel that the students at my school are so behind where technology is concerend. I am excited to find ways to make it work, it may even be one part to a group asignment. I don't know still working out all the kinks in my head.

  5. You’re right, we HAVE been learning about many new technologies this semester! I definitely want to continue blogging. The blog I created for this class is geared more for teachers and parents (you can check it out at http://lobato-bethechange.blogspot.com.), but I’d love to create a new one with my third grade students this year.

I signed up for a UEN website when I first started teaching (nine years ago), but never really did anything with it. I’d like to use it more this year to communicate information to students and parents. I was lucky enough to get a SmartBoard last fall, but experienced a lot of technical difficulties initially with the ceiling projector light bulb (go figure). It took a few weeks to get that taken care of, but by then it was our winter break. I used my SmartBoard daily for the remainder of the school year, but never to its full potential. I’d like to create more interactive activities and games for my students.

Our district set aside dates for YouTube and other social media access last year, but they were always on days I had meetings or private tutoring. I plan on attending the first one scheduled this month so I can begin incorporating this technology right away.

    Great blog! :)
