Please follow the above link to view our new English 11 course curriculum map which is reflective of the new core standards. We have just updated our course map for next year, 2011-12. This summer we will be working together to produce common assignments and assessments as our PLC English 11 Team. What are your thoughts on the new core? What changes will the new core mean for your classroom activities this next year? How will the new core impact you? What do you forsee as positive and negative results of the new core standards and practices?

  1. Crystal - your link is directed toward your computer's C: drive which the public cannot link to. You may want to replace the link with the one on the USOE website.

As for me and my school, next year we are taking the new curriculum and creating a writing course that all teachers will teach to their "advisory" or homeroom class for the entire year in addition to the student completing a regular English course. We do this because our students are extremely deficient in language arts skills. We will also be teaching a basic consumer math course to our advisory class (we have them for 2-40 minute periods.

Basic literacy and numeracy for our students are extremely important to our administration and faculty.

  2. It sounds like you and your team are way ahead of the game! Congrats! We did that last year for our 6th grade Math. It was a huge help to be so organized.

  3. The new core may affect those of us that teach elementary school a little differently. Our district has chosen to implement a little at a time and to train well before implementation. It will be a little while before we have it 100% implemented.
Personally, I have mixed feelings about the adoption of the common core. While I feel it is a good idea for all students to have learned and hopefully mastered the same concepts and requirements, it is a little too "paper-cutter" for me.
I just hope all teachers put their all into the training and implementation so that all our students will have the same advantages.
